Cost Of Soundproofing A Room
i need advice from a sound proofer please?
i’m an active musician that regularly practices everyday- sometimes for hours at a time. playing music really is my favorite thing to do. pretty soon i’ll be moving to a small city back home and i’ve found that i’ve seem to come to a few “bumps” in the road.
i want to rent a apartment that is somewhat minimalist but i don’t want to disturb neighbors with my music. i started looking at floor plans for apartments and thinking “where would be the best place to practice?”. and “what would be the easiest and cheapest way to soundproof myself?”.
my question is, are there any tricks of the trade for someone renting a apartment to soundproof themselves (in one room)?
p.s. i really don’t want to build any fake walls as it is probably going to cost too much.
i play both electronic and acoustic instruments and i sing as well. so at most i’m expecting for adjoining surfaces to only include the ceiling and floor.
Best way, if you’re playing an electric/electronic instrument, is to use headphones.
Sound-proofing is difficult, expensive, and sometimes impossible depending on other pertinent factors. Does the room you’re playing in have other resident’s apts/rooms adjoining, above, below?
More info is needed otherwise – what instrument(s)? Lower frequencies are more difficult to absorb than high ones. Generally anything “soft” in the room will absorb sound. Carpeting, drapes, fabric covered furniture, and such. Anything “hard” will not – tile, bare walls/floors, glass, mirrors, etc.
Piano and drums will benefit by being placed on a soft surface.
Acoustic ceiling tiles (specifically acoustic – not all ceiling tiles are) are relatively inexpensive and do a good job absorbing sound. They can be placed anywhere. Plush carpet hung on walls is pretty effective.
