Structural Acoustics and Vibration

Structural Acoustics and Vibration

$129

Structural Acoustics and Vibration presents the modeling of vibrations of complex structures coupled with acoustic fluids in the low and medium frequency ranges. It is devoted to mechanical models, variationalformulations and discretization for calculating linear vibrations in the frequency domain of complex structures. The book includes theoretical formulations which are directly applicable to develop computer codes for the numerical simulation of complex systems, and gives a general scientific strategy to solve various complex structural acoustics problems in different areas such as spacecraft, aircraft, automobiles, and naval structures. The researcher may directly apply the material of the book to practical problems such as acoustic pollution, the comfort of passengers, and acoustic loads induced by propellers. Structural Acoustics and Vibration considers the mechanical and numerical aspects of the problem, and gives original solutions to the predictability of vibrations of complex structures interacting with internal and external, liquid and gaseous fluids. It is a self-contained general synthesis with a didactic presentation and fills the gap between analytical methods applied to simple geometries and statistical methods, which are useful in high frequency structural acoustic problems.

This textbook treats the broad range of modern acoustics from the basics of wave propagation in solids and fluids to applications such as noise control and cancellation, underwater acoustics, music and music synthesis, sonoluminescence, and medical diagnostics with ultrasound. The discussion begins with a historical overview. It then turns to a derivation of the wave equation from the fundamental equations of motion for fluids and for solids, with solutions of the equation in open air and in bounded media such as strings, bars, membranes, and pipes. Sound filters and electric analogs for sound propagation are also treated. A chapter on measurement techniques provides a comprehensive survey of the means of evaluating sound levels and frequency content of signals. A section of the physiology of hearing and psychoacoustics includes recent findings on how the human ear functions. The remainder of the book deals with a wide variety of applications including architectural acoustics; enclosures and barriers; noise codes and regulations;, and methods of noise control; underwater acoustics; ultrasound; vibration control; and music, musical instruments, and reproduction of music. The new edition is up-to-date and forward-looking in approach. Chapter 2 now covers fluid-fluid interface effects, with additional information on newest measurement techniques. Updates are provided on the use of ultrasound in industry, and deeper coverage is provided on medical uses of ultrasound. The chapter on music and musical instruments has been broken up into two chapters, one chapter covering music and musical instruments and the other covering sound reproduction and including the latest devices such MP3®; iPod®; 5.1-, 6.1-, and 7.1-channel systems; and THX® and Iosono® theater systems. Additional coverage of the opto-acoustics and sonoluminescence phenomena is included. New problems have been added throughout.

Nonlinear Acoustics Through Problems and Examples

Nonlinear Acoustics Through Problems and Examples

$18.48

The fundamentals of nonlinear acoustics are presented in form of problems followed by solutions, explanations and answers. As distinct from existing textbooks, this book of problems not only helps the reader to become familiar with nonlinear wave processes and the methods of their description, but contributes to mastering calculation procedures and obtaining numerical estimates of the most significant parameters. Thereby, skills are acquired which are indispensable for carrying out original scientific research. This book can be useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers working in the field of nonlinear wave physics and acoustics.

Computational Acoustics of Noise Propagation in Fluids

Computational Acoustics of Noise Propagation in Fluids

$121.5

The book provides a survey of numerical methods for acoustics, namely the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). In particular, the FEM is often used for interior problems whereas BEM is quite popular for exterior problems. This book shows that both methods can be effectively used for many other cases, FEM even for open domains and BEM for closed ones. Emphasis of the book is put on numerical aspects and on treatment of the exterior problem in acoustics, i.e. noise radiation. Numerical aspects cover the use of different types of elements, discussing the rule of using a fixed number of elements per wavelength and iterative solution techniques for the arising system of equations. Fast boundary element techniques and multi-domain BEM are discussed in this context too. Exterior problems in the context of finite elements will survey different techniques of treatment such as infinite elements, absorbing boundary conditions and perfectly matched layers. Further, the fields of frequency-range solutions by Lanczos via Pade approximation and modal solutions are covered. In the context of BEM, the so-called irregular frequencies are considered. This is followed by considering sound propagation above an impedance plane, formulation of spectral elements, a method for treatment of thin radiators and radiation modes. Both chapters conclude with sections on fluid-structure interaction, on inverse problems and on energy methods, respectively. Finally, the book discusses future challenges in the field of numerical methods in acoustics.

Acoustics of Fluid-Structure Interactions (Cambridge Monographs on Mechanics)

Acoustics of Fluid-Structure Interactions (Cambridge Monographs on Mechanics)

$65.48

Acoustics of Fluid-Structure Interactions addresses an increasingly important branch of fluid mechanics–the absorption of noise and vibration by fluid flow. This subject, which offers numerous challenges to conventional areas of acoustics, is of growing concern in places where the environment is adversely affected by sound. Howe presents useful background material on fluid mechanics and the elementary concepts of classical acoustics and structural vibrations. Using examples, many of which include complete worked solutions, he vividly illustrates the theoretical concepts involved. He provides the basis for all calculations necessary for the determination of sound generation by aircraft, ships, general ventilation and combustion systems, as well as musical instruments. Both a graduate textbook and a reference for researchers, Acoustics of Fluid-Structure Interactions is an important synthesis of information in this field. It will also aid engineers in the theory and practice of noise control.
